La Lumiere alumnus Paris Barclay ’74 recently received the Directors Guild of America Honorary Life Membership Award. This award was given in “recognition of leadership in the industry, contribution to the guild and the profession of directing, and outstanding career achievement,” according to the DGA website.

During the DGA’s 73rd ceremony, filmmaker Ava DuVernay presented Barclay with the award and described Barclay as “one who stood alone as the first in multiple categories again and again, and used that position not to celebrate himself, but pry open doors for the second, the third and the hundreds of us who followed him.”

After receiving the award, Barclay’s acceptance speech addressed his two sons and encouraged them both to be men of purpose and find their own “guild” to work alongside to improve their piece of the world.

During Barclay’s time as a television director, producer, and writer he has worked on episodes of NYPD Blue, ER, Glee, The Good Wife, Empire, and many others. From 2014-2017, Barclay served as the DGA President and has participated in the Guild in other leadership roles.
